List of Anime LaserDiscs Presented in Altered Aspect Ratios

Although most anime is produced and composed for the 4:3 Academy Ratio frame which is used by NTSC television as well as in the cinema, some is not. Material produced for theatrical projection or widescreen television may have such ratios as 5:3, 16:9, 11:6, or even 7:3. In order to fit this image unaltered into the common 4:3 frame, some space is wasted, typically in the form of black bars at the top and bottom of the picture. This list embraces those discs in which the original image has not been preserved: either material at the sides has been cropped off, or the image has been compressed horizontally, or [for material animated at Academy Ratio and intended to be shown with the top and bottom of the frame masked off] the mattes have been opened. If a disc is listed under this head, except for material with an "anamorphic widescreen" transfer [compressed horizontally to 16:9 for widescreen displays], purchassing it is disrecommended.
